Belgian Pro League Season Review: Beerschot

Finish position: 16th

Overview:

Beerschot only won five of their 36 games in the Pro League, two of which came after they had already been relegated. In truth, Dirk Kuyt’s side never equipped themselves to compete at the top level of Belgian football last summer and suffered an inevitable relegation. New ownership is now sorely needed, one that will prioritise investing in the club to get it back on track. After just one season, the side are now facing a return to the Challenger Pro League.

Player of the Season: Faisel Al-Ghamdi

It is tough to find any standouts for the side this past season, but Saudi Arabian loanee Faisel Al-Ghamdi had a decent first year in European football. The 23-year-old was combative in the midfield and helped himself to a goal and an assist in 29 games. It will be interesting to see if this experience helps him on his return to Saudi football.

Young Player of the Season: Marwan Al Sahafi

Another of the loanees from Saudi Arabia, 21-year-old Al Sahafi had a few big moments. He scored six goals in 28 games to lead the side in that regard. A few of his goals were excellent solo finishes which, while showing his ability, also highlighted how Beerschot were reliant on individual brilliance to hurt their opponents.

Summer needs:

New owners and a clear recruitment plan. The side did not equip themselves well enough to fight against relegation, so if they are eyeing an immediate return to the Pro League they need to put some of the components together this summer that could help them should they win promotion next season. However, new owners will go a long way to making that a possibility.
