What if the coronavirus pandemic doesn’t mean stadiums have to be empty?
What If the echo of the ball and incessant clapping of backroom staff don’t have to be the new soundtrack to each and every game?
The return of the Bundesliga last week saw Sky Sport in Germany offer fans the chance to switch to a fake audio.
Clips from the stands from old games were selected, if fans chose to listen to them, depending on what was happening on the pitch.
But what if we could take it one step further and still see a vibrant stadium, with full stands?
OZ Sports think they can create exactly that.
The question is: does anyone want this?
The experience of being a football match without genuine choreos? Or without being able to hug the stranger next to you while you celebrate? No flares, no uncensored banners.
A truly sanitised matchday experience. One that could muffle fans and, if it takes hold long term, could destroy the sense of community that football clubs around the world are built on.
Are fans really this replaceable?
