Alan Hutton has warned Rangers they need to be “very cautious” about bringing Kemar Roofe back too early after his injury setback.

The former Gers defender and lifelong fan of the club, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists that muscle injuries can reoccur easily in training and that the striker needs to be managed properly to avoid any further issues.

Speaking to Rangers TV about the 27-year-old’s absence, Gerrard confirmed he would be “missing in the short-term” after a scan identified an issue on what the club originally thought was a tight calf.

Roofe has already suffered a number of calf problems during his time at Leeds United and Anderlecht and he failed to feature for the Belgian side in 2020 as a result.

Hutton insists that Rangers cannot roll the dice on the striker’s fitness after his past injury record and has urged Gerrard to be completely confident he is over the problem before the hitman is thrown back into the fray.

Asked if Rangers had to avoid taking a risk on Roofe’s return, Hutton told Football Insider: “100 per cent. Obviously they’ve had a real tough time with injuries over the last week or so and he has had that sort of problem sort of plague him over the last few seasons.

“They’re very niggly and they can be annoying – you think it’s away and you step out to train after a week off and bang, you can feel it again, you’re out for another week.

“I think you’ve got to be very cautious with this one. Take your time, make sure he’s fit, there’s big games coming up and then bring him back in.”

Gerrard told Rangers TV: “He’s been sent for a scan, we originally thought it was a bit of tightness in his calf, he thought it was tightness in his calf.

“On assessment it was looking that way but something showed up so he’s going to be missing in the short term.”
