Eddie Howe and his Newcastle United players looking to get back to the form that brought wins against Chelsea, Arsenal and Forest, only a month ago.

Newcastle hosting Liverpool, who have just steamrollered Man City at the weekend and are clear at the top.

Chris Sutton talking to BBC Sport – 2 December 2024:

“Newcastle have looked a little flat recently, and have been lacking a cutting edge.

“This is still a tough game for Liverpool, though, off the back of such a big week for them with wins over Real Madrid and Manchester City.

“The Magpies have already beaten Arsenal at St James’ Park this season and they are certainly capable of getting something against Liverpool too, but you just cannot back against the leaders at the moment.

“Arne Slot has such great strength in depth right through his squad and they can win games in different ways.

“Even if they do drop points here, their bubble is not going to burst anytime soon.

“Prediction: Newcastle 1 Liverpool 2”

So is the BBC Sport man on the money with his comments?

It goes without saying that Newcastle United will have to play well to stand a chance of getting anything on Wednesday.

Liverpool rolling with so much confidence and momentum, Man City lucky to lose by only two at Anfield.

As Chris Sutton points out though, only four matches ago, Newcastle United beat currently second in the table Arsenal at St James’ Park, keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 win. The match before that, Eddie Howe’s side won against Chelsea (in the cup), who are currently third in the Premier League, that one another clean sheet in a 2-0 win. Whilst three games ago it was an excellent 3-1 victory at Forest.

If Newcastle can play at those levels, then every chance they can give Liverpool a proper match and could well get a positive result.

Obviously though, if Eddie Howe’s team show as little goal threat as they did at Palace, then difficult to see anything but an away victory on Wednesday.
