Intriguing to read through these BBC Sport comments, following on from Newcastle United’s 1-1 draw with Everton on Tuesday night.
The comments from neutrals especially telling…
A lot of it different to what Newcastle United fans had come to expect from the BBC Sport ‘neutrals’.
The BBC Sport comments from neutrals in the past had been overwhelmingly a catalogue of abuse aimed at NUFC supporters.
Particularly stuff about the Newcastle United owners and the media inspired pile-ons that NUFC fans have become used to, when blamed for who now owns their club.
On this occasion though, the politics almost totally absent.
Instead, pretty much just about the actual football and the referee and VAR…
A lot to debate in this game.
The BBC Sport readers comments from neutrals, Everton fans and the odd Newcastle supporter also contributing:
‘Definitely a pen. Toon much the better side but you have to take your chances.’
‘Classy, Jordies are proper!’
‘A member of the Toon army speaking sense! And he might even have his shirt on! Unbelievable, where’s Attenborough and crew?! But yes you were robbed really, once again we were bad, Pickford and DCL saving us from another drubbing there.’
‘Perhaps I’m the only one who’s going to say that it wasn’t a pen. I thought first of all it was, but if you look at Young’s right arm, he has locked on with Dummett’s right arm above the elbow & then Young twists & falls causing Dummett to grab on to stop falling. Not complaining, used to do it myself & it regularly got a result & well done to Young, in a desperate situation you’d whatever you can.’
‘Sean Dyche anti football. Feel sorry for Everton fans watching that every week.’
‘Hey! Don’t you be talking about the ginger Mourinho.’
‘Well, it’s not as if you choose who you support.’
‘They’re playing Newcastle away. They’re not going to go all-out-attack, are they?’
‘More points unnecessarily dropped by the Magpies, looks like they really want to play in the Euro Conference League next season.
Everton may not be winning but they are picking up a point here and there and that will save them this season.’
‘Until they get deducted more points for spending too much.’
‘Seems most neutrals want rid of Everton who stink out the Prem year in, year out.’
‘Everton are like that relative who just refuses to leave.’
‘The premier league need to give them another 10 point deduction.’
‘Should have had the points deducted last season which would have led to demotion. Maybe justice will be done this season.’
‘Right result and I would imagine both teams will end up in the league position that they are now at the end of the season which is about right. A couple of average teams but I only hope Everton survive given they were docked points when there are ‘bigger’ clubs around them bending the rules big time.’
‘Right result??? You were dreadful and can thank Magpies (cudnt hit a barn door tonight) and Pickford. Newcastle excellent but no finish.’
‘Just look at the other clubs breaking the rules !! Man Utd are millions in debt! Man City and Chelsea been breaking the rules for years !!!’
‘Great performance by Pickford despite the cavemen targeting him, well done Jordon.’
‘Have NUFC done really well with the squad they have, or are they under performing? I think it’s the former.
Everton have done really, really well with the squad they have.
And that goes for both managers – getting the most out of what they have.
So some may have expected an NUFC win, but I think Everton fancied their chances of grabbing a point tonight.’
‘It’s not about the squad you have, it’s about how much of that squad you can get on the pitch over the course of a whole season.
Arguably only 4 of tonight’s side would have started if everyone was fit – Bruno, Isak, Burn and Schar. The penalty was given away by a 5th-choice left back.
3 points would have really boosted our momentum and Euro prospects, 1 point keeps it in the balance.’
‘Very happy to get a point. And happy for DCL to get a goal. Good performance by Pickford too. It had to be! We were getting battered for 75 mins. But we can still only score if some numpty has a moment of madness and gifts us a pen. What was he thinking? That ain’t going to happen very often!’
‘Well done Blues, fortunate point but the amount of games we’ve dominated this season and had zero luck, it’s about time we had the rub of the green. Need to start Gomez and never play Beto from the start. Newcastles a tough place to come, especially considering our recent run so will take a point.’
‘Bournemouth fan in peace…Everton were very lucky…’
‘Newcastle have all the money but can’t spend it , at least in the levels required to compete, best they can do is invest in the youth and start foreign networks to recruit from and boost their global reach marketing wise. If the takeover had happened 15 years ago, they be champions league winners.’
