Levi Colwill has been a regular fixture for Chelsea this season – in fact, he’s the only central defender who’s been ever present, when available, for Enzo Maresca.

Like most players in the team he’s had some good games and some bad. Chelsea fans are well aware of his talent and want to see him at his best. Writing for the BBC this week, Nedum Onuoha had some interesting defence for the 22 year old and predicted bigger and better things to come for him:

“He has played week-in week-out and that is only going to be good for him and his development when it is only his second full season at Chelsea. As a left-footed centre half, I do see him growing into that position and being around the England set-up will only help his drive to be successful,” Onuoha wrote.

“If he can go to the World Cup in 2026 then that would be massive for him. I can see the argument for fans wanting him to be more consistent because they can see his potential, but as a 22-year-old he is the youngest of Chelsea’s back four.”

“He might not be reaching his full potential now but that will come with game time and there are some big games coming up for Chelsea. They have the chance to win a European competition as well as earning a place in the Champions League.”

Colwill in position to make major breakthrough next season

The World Cup next summer is a perfect thing for Colwill to aim for. Assuming he stays as first choice, and we get a more stable back 4 next season, there’s no reason he can’t establish himself as a first choice for Thomas Tuchel’s England before then. He was in the squad during this break, but will have been disappointed to have not played a minute.

There are some young talents coming through in defence for the Three Lions but Colwill is as good as any of them, and should be playing Champions League football next season. He needs to improve – but we all know he’s got more than enough talent to do just that.
