Marseille were looking for a third consecutive Ligue 1 Uber Eats win that would cement their grip on second place in the table but Jorge Sampaoli’s side fell behind in the 13th minute and never recovered. Bayo opened the scoring for Clermont with an emphatic finish high into the net from the edge of the box from Akim Zedadka’s cutback to move into double figures for the campaign.

After that the visitors sat back and soaked up everything Marseille could throw at them. OM had all the possession but laboured to create chances of note, even if Ouparine Djoco did have to turn a Dimitri Payet shot around the post late in the first half.

The home side looked livelier for a spell in the second half following the introduction of Bamba Dieng but still they struggled to really trouble Djoco, even if Valentin Rongier sent a volleyed effort just wide.

With time running out for Marseille, Clermont secured the points by grabbing a second goal six minutes from the end. Jason Berthomier sent in a corner from the left and fellow substitute Jim Allevinah - one of the smallest players in either squad - rose above Gerson to head in at the far post.

Clermont then held out for victory in their first ever visit to the Vélodrome, and a third win in four games for Pascal Gastien’s side sees them move six points clear of the relegation zone before hosting Girondins de Bordeaux next weekend. Marseille, meanwhile, see their lead over Nice in third trimmed back to a single point and also miss the chance to trim Paris Saint-Germain’s lead at the top of the table.

THE PLAYER: Mohamed Bayo

All eyes were on Arkadiusz Milik, who was included in the Marseille starting line-up after coming off the bench to score a stunning winner against FC Metz last weekend and then scoring a double against Qarabag in Europe on Thursday. Yet while he had a disappointing night, it was Clermont centre-forward Bayo who stole the show with a brilliant opener. The Guinea international found the net for the first time this calendar year to move on to 10 goals in his debut top-flight campaign.

THE STAT: 9

Clermont have taken nine points from the last 12 available, beating Stade Rennais FC, OGC Nice and Marseille in that time to boost their hopes of avoiding relegation.
