Bayern's goalkeeping crisis continues with Neuer setback

Manuel Neuer needs a break from recovery training after he reported a reaction in the calf muscle. The German international has been out of action since suffering a calf strain in Bayern Munich’s comfortable win over Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16.

Vincent Kompany’s side already used four goalkeepers this season. Before the latest setback, Neuer, who will turn 39 next week, was expected to be back in the side for Bayern’s upcoming game against St. Pauli. January signing Jonas Urbig gets the nod ahead of Sven Ulreich and Daniel Peretz since Neuer’s third injury layoff of the season.

Despite conceding three goals against Bochum, Urbig produced a decent performance on his Bundesliga debut. It was his mistake that allowed Union Berlin to snatch a late draw against the league leaders, though.

Meanwhile, the 21-year-old also had to depart Germany’s U21 squad after a foot injury. Urbig will hope to return to full fitness for Bayern’s Champions League tie against Inter. Both Ulreich and Peretz are yet to feature for the Bavarians in 2025. The former had a night to forget against Real Madrid in the semi-final of the 2017-18 season.
