Javi Martínez seems set to secure a move away from Bayern Munich before the transfer deadline, with the club now agreeing to let him go on a free transfer.

It has seemed for some time like the 32-year-old was going to return home to join Athletic Club but they couldn’t come to an agreement with Bayern.

However, Sky now report that the German champions’ stance has changed and they will now allow him to leave without seeking a fee.

That allows Athletic to re-enter the race for his services as they had previously shown a reluctance to pay a fee for the man they sold to Bayern in 2012 for €40 million.

The reason that the club appear willing to overlook a fee is due to the savings they would make on his salary, with Martínez earning a reported annual salary of between €5m and €7m.

Athletic aren’t the only club who have expressed an interest in the Spaniard though, with Al Nassr also tabling a more attractive financial offer with his representatives.

While a return to Bilbao would be more appealing in a sporting sense, it is unclear where the player feels his future lies.
