Bayern vs. Inter: Match Guide

Article image:Bayern vs. Inter: Match Guide

The wait is over, the Champions League is back. Inter and Bayern Munich will face off in the quarter-finals in a historical battle. The kick-off of the first leg is scheduled for Tuesday 8 April at the Fußball Arena München.

FIXTURE HISTORY

This is the tenth match in European competition history between Bayern Munich and Inter. The Germans have won five, with one draw and three Nerazzurri wins. The last two-legged fixture dates back to the group stage in 2022/23, when Bayern triumphed 2-0. Inter eliminated Bayern Munich in the last two times in which we played them in the knockout phase of the competition. Our 2-0 win in the 2010 final in Madrid was unforgettable, just like the Round of 16 in 2010/11, where we qualified thanks to our away-goal advantage (3-3 on aggregate). Not only this: only Real Madrid have eliminated Bayern more in the knockout phase (seven times). Inter are part of a small group of five teams to have managed it more than once, alongside Barcelona, Chelsea and AC Milan.

THE NERAZZURRI'S NUMBERS

Simone Inzaghi's team will go into the quarter-finals with positive numbers. Of ten games played in this year's Champions League, the Nerazzuri have kept a clean sheet eight times, that is 80%: it is the highest percentage ever for a team having played at least ten games in one season of the competition.

LAUTARO AND DIMARCO ON TOP

Lautaro Martínez continues to reach new heights for the Nerazzurri. In this season, he has already scored six goals in nine appearances. The last Inter player to do so in a single season in the Champions League was Samuel Eto'o in 2010/11 (eight goals), and his last goal was actually scored against Bayern Munich.

Federico Dimarco will also be a key player as he keeps growing at European level. With six assists provided in the last three Champions League campaigns, he has the second-best record for defenders, only behind Hakimi (eight). It is also interesting that all of his six assists have set up different players: Dzeko, Çalhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Correa, Martínez and Thuram.

THE OPPOSITION: BAYERN MUNICH

The Germans are in good form. In Bundesliga, they are in first place on 68 points, six more than Bayer Leverkusen after 28 matchdays. They have 21 wins and five draws and they have the best attack with 81 goals, and the best defense with 27 goals conceded. Their path in the Champions League group phase ended with 15 points and five wins. They scored 20, and conceded twelve. In the knockout phase, they first beat Celtic before knocking out Bayer Leverkusen in the Round of 16. Bayern Munich are one of European football's great forces. The Bavarians are unbeaten in their last 22 home games in the Champions League (17 wins and five draws). Their last home loss dates back to April 2021, against Paris Saint-Germain. The German side stands out for their intense pressing: with 121.8 presses in the final third per match on average, Bayern have the best record for this stat in the Champions League. Vincent Kompany's side should play a 4-2-3-1, with a four back including Laimer, Kim, Dier and Guerreir, with Kimmich and Goretzka in midfiled, then Olise, Muller and Sané supporting Kane. Musiala, Neuer, Coman, Upamecano, Davies, Ito and Pavlovic won't be available. Harry Kane is the focal point of the Bavarian strike force: with 12 goals in 11 appearances this year, he has reached 50 goal participations in 55 matches in the Champions League (39 goals and 11 assists). In Bayern's history, only Robert Lewandowski has done better in a single season.
