Hansi Flick has admitted Robert Lewandowski was subbed off as a precaution rather than due to an injury during Bayern Munich’s 1-0 win over SC Ausburg.

Lewandowski scored the only goal of the game – a cool penalty – to give Bayern an important win and maintain their lead at the top of the table.

The goal was his 22nd of the season – a record at the halfway stage of a Bundesliga season.

The 32-year-old has struck 12 goals in his past 11 games for Bayern.

Flick took his star striker off in the second half as Lewandowski had been experiencing muscular issues earlier in the day.

“He already felt something in his muscles this morning, but said he could manage it well,” Fick told FCBayern.com.

“He was supposed to let us know if he couldn’t go on, and that’s what he did. It was a precaution because Robert is very important for us. We didn’t want to take any risks there.”

Bayern were far from their best after the Pole was subbed off, but managed to hold on for a win.

If the injury concerns are nothing major, Lewandowski should be fit for this weekend’s clash against FC Schalke 04.
