Bayern Munich have studdered in the Bundesliga title race after succumbing to an impressive Mainz during a 2-1 defeat at Mewa Arena.
Kompany's men were on the hunt to collect all three points on their final away day of the Hinrunde and were certainly confident on the back of a 10-3-0 coming into the weekend's fixture program, but Bo Henriksen's Mainz had other ideas on the back of consecutive home wins.
Scorers: Lee 41', 60'; Sané 87'
Both sides had early chances to strike first inside the opening 15 minutes through Michael Olise and Jonathan Burkardt respectively, but Die Nullfünfer head trainer Bo Henriksen was made to cope watching his captain limp off injured in the 15th minute with an apparent hamstring injury.
The absence of key man Harry Kane was evident and glaring for Kompany’s side as they looked to pick up all the points on their travels, with Bayern icon Thomas Müller tasked with replacing the England international, but struggling to have a similar impact.
Mainz would take the lead in the 41st minute through veteran South Korean international winger Lee Jae-sung, tucking away from inside 12 yards after Germany U21 forward - and Bayern loanee - Armindo Sieb’s effort deflected off Olise into his path.
Kompany would hope for a much-improved performance in the second half after Bayern failed to muster a single shot to test Mainz keeper Robin Zentner in the opening stanza despite their expected dominance in possession.
That improvement would fail to arrive.
Lee would double Mainz’s advantage on the day in the 60th minute, with Sieb once again directly involved. This time, Lee would find the back of the net from just 6 yards out after turning to shoot before watching his goal-bound effort deflect up and over Daniel Peretz.
Bayern would finally claw one back in the 87th minute through Leroy Sané, who quickly pounced from six yards after Germany colleague Joshua Kimmich's effort was blocked into the winger's path to give Kompany's men hope in the dying minutes.
Still to of the table, Bayern will now go into next weekend with just a four-point advantage over Leverkusen, while Mainz climbs to sixth.
