Bayern Munich defender Niklas Süle has laughed off suggestions that he is overweight despite facing criticism in the media.
Süle found himself in the headlines after returning to pre-season training in July, where he looked slightly heavier than usual.
But the 23-year-old hit a top speed of 21.62 miles per hour last season – only 0.04 slower than winger Kingsley Coman – and insists the claims are rubbish.
“I’m not buff like Lewy [Robert Lewandowski], but I’m no lard-arse,” he told Kicker. “I’m relatively stocky.
“In spite of my size and frame, I’m relatively quick, if not over the first five metres than over long distances.”
“I’m not getting involved in the debate,” the German international added. “But I’m happy to be acknowledged!
“If people are talking about me then I must be doing a good job.”
Süle has already established himself at Bayern after joining from Hoffenheim in 2017, making 84 appearances for the club.
