Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer has claimed the current financial crisis at Barcelona is a cautionary tale to the rest of Europe’s top clubs.
The Catalan giants were forced to watch club legend Lionel Messi leave for Paris Saint-Germain in the summer as monetary restrictions prevented them from giving the Argentinian genius a new contract.
And the facile nature of Bayern’s 3-0 win at the Nou Camp on Matchday 1 of the Champions League group stages recently was a further indication of how far Barça have fallen off the pace.
“Barcelona should be a warning to all of us that we have to try to regulate things better in order to ensure the special rivalry between the clubs in the long-term,” Hainer told Munich newspaper Abendzeitung.
“I am convinced that the corona pandemic has made the problem even more obvious. We all talk about Barcelona because it is so obvious there and has been made public.
“But there are certainly more clubs that have financial difficulties.
“And, nevertheless, the players’ salaries are rising and the consultants’ fees are getting bigger and bigger. That cannot be healthy and intentional.”
The Bavarians will welcome Barça to the Allianz Arena in their return fixture on Matchday 6 in early December.
