It was third against first in the opening Bundesliga game of 2023 as Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann went up against his former club RB Leipzig.

After 68 days off (the longest mid-season break since 1996-97), both clubs were fairly rusty on their return to action.

Dominik Szoboszlai and André Silva led the hosts forward, while Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sané were eager to pull the strings for the visitors.

However, only a handful of attempts arrived in the first half and things remained deadlocked.

That was until Serge Gnabry’s cross found Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting right in front of the goal to turn the ball home 1-0.

After the break, the hosts ramped up the pressure and pulled level within minutes as Bayern’s defence was caught sleeping.

Marcel Halstenberg redirected the ball beyond debutant goalkeeper Yann Sommer, who subsequently failed to register a clean sheet in his first game for the German giants.

Drama then ensued at the hour mark as Leipzig protested for a red card.

Dayot Upamecano brought Szoboszlai down from behind, who was through on goal, yet the defender was only shown yellow despite cries from the hosts.

Over time, both sides made several substitutions (including Thomas Müller and Timo Werner) to find a late winner, but things finished 1-1.

Bayern (35 points) will be unimpressed with the slip-up in their first game back and could see their lead cut to two if Freiburg win on Saturday.

Leipzig, meanwhile, have 29 points and could drop to fifth.
