Germany have been dealt a blow in their preparations for the upcoming international friendlies with the news that Jamal Musiala has been forced to withdraw due to injury.

National team coach Hansi Flick confirmed during a DFB press conference on Monday that Musiala picked up a hamstring injury during Bayern Munich’s 2-1 Bundesliga defeat to Bayer Leverkusen Sunday, and the forward will now be unavailable for Germany’s friendly with Peru on 25 March, as well as the meeting with Belgium three days later.

“It’s a pity for everyone that Jamal won’t be with us in the next games,” said Flick.

“We hope that he can play again after the international break, especially for the last games of the season at his club.”

Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann confirmed before the Leverkusen game that Musiala had been feeling muscular discomfort in training, and the 20-year-old subsequently started on the bench for the trip to the BayArena before being brought on at half-time.

Musiala has scored 15 goals and assisted 13 others this season, and was poised to earn his 21st senior cap for Germany in the upcoming friendlies.

The news could be a big blow for Bayern, too, with the Bundesliga champions set to host league leaders Borussia Dortmund when club action returns on 1 April.

Musiala is now expected to be sidelined for a few weeks, and Flick is likely call up a replacement to the squad in due course.
