With the football on hold at the moment, weâve been thinking about who gets in Bayern Munichâs all-time XI.
Yesterday we chose the first of three midfielders. Today weâre choosing the second.
Here are the nominees âŠ
Franz Rothâs playing style was aggressive, full throttle and commanding.
Nickname âThe Bullâ, Rothâs role was to hunt down the creative hub of the opposition and hinder their effect on the game. This was something he was more than capable of doing, as former Bayern player and president Uli HoeneĂ was on the recieveing end of during training.
âI used to put shin pads on for training, because I knew if Franz was cross with me, heâd dump me on the running track.â
Roth helped Bayern win four Bundesliga titles and three European Cups in his 435 appearances for the club.
Scholl was one of the most creative players to ever don the Bayern Munich shirt. An eye for a pinpoint pass that would split even the tightest defence open, which was matched by his love the club which the basis for his 15 year spell at the club.
The midfielder was the instigator of attacks from the middle of the pitch and scored 117 goals and produced over 100 assists in 469 appearances for Bayern.
His trophy cabinet is deservedly full, with eight league titles packing it to the brim, and of course that fateful Champions League won in 2001 after a penalty shootout victory over Valencia.
Effenberg spent six years at the club in two separate spells and it was his second coming in Bavaria that made him synonymous with Bayern Munich.
The industrious midfielder was a natural-born leader and drove his team on when he was needed the most.
âEffeâ perhaps wasnât as technically gifted as the likes of Scholl but he was a powerhouse that spurred Bayern to three Bundesliga titles nonetheless.
It was his role in the club winning the Champions League in 2001 that is the main reason why he is so fondly remembered in Munich.
Effenberg was the captain for the final against Valencia and stepped up when it mattered most.
âIn the four seasons he spent with us, it was one of the most successful periods in Bayernâs history, and a lot of that was down to him.â
The midfielder dispatched the equalising penalty to get Bayern back in the game and the rest as they say is history.
A midfield dynamo in every sense of the world.
Stefan Effenberg forges a remarkable midfield partnership with Lothar MatthÀus.
Hereâs how the team is looking so far âŠ
GK: Oliver Kahn RB: Philipp Lahm LB: David Alaba CB: Klaus Augenthaler CB: Franz Beckenbauer CM: Lothar MatthÀus CM: Stefan Effenberg
Check back tomorrow when we will be choosing the third midfielder!
