With the football on hold at the moment, we’ve been thinking about who gets in Bayern Munich’s all-time XI.

Yesterday we chose Klaus Augenthaler as the first centre-back. Today we’re choosing his partner.

Here are the nominees …

3rd – Lúcio

Lúcio arrived at the Olympic Stadium in 2003 with an impeccable reputation.

After winning the World Cup with Brazil and leading Bayer Leverkusen to the Champions League final in 2002, the centre-half was one of the highest-rated defenders in European football when he signed for Bayern.

The Brazilian continued that success while in Bavaria, as Bayern completed the league and cup double in three out of the five seasons he was at the club.

A commanding presence at the back who came back to haunt Bayern while playing for Inter Milan during the Champions League final in 2010, as his performance helped to shut out his old team in a 2-0 win.

2nd – Hans-Georg Schwarzenbeck

Schwarzenbeck is a real Bayern Munich legend.

One of the most decorated players in the club’s history, ‘Katsche’ Schwarzenbeck is fifth in the all-time appearances list for Bayern after featuring in over 500 games for the club.

His abilities were present in ensuring Bayern Munich became one of the biggest clubs in world football.

During his 16-year career, Schwarzenbeck won five league titles and three European Cups.

An incredible trophy haul for this one-club man.

And the winner is … Franz Beckenbauer

It had to be. It was always going to be.

Der Kaiser.

The greatest defender to play for Bayern Munich. One of the greatest defenders to play the game.

It almost feels disrespectful to call him a defender, because Franz Beckenbauer was much more than that.

A sweeper, a libero, the instigator of many attacking moves as well as forming a wall around the Bayern Munich goal.

Beckenbauer had elegance and dominated the football pitch.

While representing Bayern, the club won four league titles, four DFB-Pokals and three European Cups.

“You’d have to say he was the perfect player”

World Cup and European Championship titles for the national side add prestige to a glistening honours list.

Beckenbauer will forever be remembered as one of the greats of the game, and Bayern Munich supporters had the honour of having him play for their club.
