With the football on hold at the moment, we’ve been thinking about who gets in Bayern Munich’s all-time XI.
Today we’re choosing the left-back.
Here are the nominees …
It’s a real testament to Breitner’s ability that he could, and probably will, appear in the best central-midfielders list for Bayern Munich during this rundown.
A brilliant attacking full-back during his first spell at the club, Breitner helped Bayern to win three Bundesliga titles and the 1974 European Cup before a controversial move to Real Madrid.
However, he returned to Bavaria in 1978 to reach double-figures in goals for five consecutive seasons on the way to winning two more league titles.
Bixente Lizarazu was another left-back who flourished in two separate spells at the club.
After joining from Athletic Bilbao in 1997, the Frenchman lifted three consecutive Bundesliga titles and scored a penalty in the shootout which brought home the Champions League in the final over Valencia in 2001.
Lizarazu became the first player to be a European and World champion for both club and country in 2001 after winning the Intercontinental Cup , with France holding the World Cup and European Championship titles at the same time.
David Alaba will go down in Bayern Munich folklore.
One of the most technically gifted full-backs to have played for the club, as recognised by his former boss Pep Guardiola.
“For me, he is the best full-back there is.”
Eight Bundesliga titles. Four DFB-Pokals. One Champions League and one Club World Cup. Alaba has pretty much won it all in Bavaria.
The fact he is now reinventing himself as a centre-back under Hansi Flick shows the game intelligence Alaba has. Incredible.
Here’s how the team is looking so far …
GK: Oliver Kahn RB: Philipp Lahm LB: David Alaba
Check back tomorrow and Monday when we will be choosing Bayern Munich’s greatest ever … centre-backs.
