Here are the first three nominees …

3rd – Jérôme Boateng

Bôateng has been a part of the furniture of the Bayern Munich defence since his arrival from Manchester City in 2011.

The 31-year-old is a formidable presence at centre-half and deserves to be remembered for more than the time Lionel Messi turned him inside out in a Champions League game in 2015.

He has played his role in winning seven consecutive Bundesliga titles, four DFB-Pokals and one Champions League. Bôateng has formed part of the defence which has led to Bayern’s dominance of German football in the last decade.

2nd – Hans Pflügler

Hans Pflügler was an engineer by trade before he became a footballer. And he engineered a lot of Bayern’s success in the 1980’s from the back.

Pflügler made over 270 appearances for the club, scoring 36 goals which is not a bad return for a centre-back.

However, it was his stability and strength at the back which helped Bayern to win five Bundesliga titles and three domestic cups during his time representing the club.

And the winner is … Klaus Augenthaler

Klaus Augenthaler took over the baton left by Franz Beckenbauer in leading Bayern Munich from the sweeper/libero role.

This was a defender who had all the positional sense of Der Kaiser, but also had the gracefulness of a technical midfielder to start and lead attacks from defence.

Augenthaler was one of the Bavarian club’s true leaders, captaining the club from 1984 until he retired in 1991.

With over 400 appearances and 52 goals for the club, this was another in a long line of Bayern Munich defenders who knew where the net is, as well as being able to keep them out at the other end.

Augenthaler collected seven league titles during his time playing for Bayern, but the illustrious European Cup alluded him, although he was a runner-up on two occasions.

Bayern lost 1-0 to Aston Villa in 1982 and they fell again to FC Porto in 1987.

Here’s how the team is looking so far …

GK: Oliver Kahn RB: Philipp Lahm LB: David Alaba CB: Klaus Augenthaler
