Ten Hag "very respectful" of Bayern Munich ahead of Champions League clash

Manchester United slumped to a third consecutive defeat after a promising start to their Champions League opener against Bayern Munich.

Christian Eriksen should have opened the scoring inside the first five minutes only to be denied by a sharp save from Sven Ulreich. A howler from Andre Onana then gave the hosts the opening goal and they continued to flow on a strange night in Munich.

Leroy Sane added a second before the break and Rasmus Hojlund netted his first goal for United to give them hope of a comeback after the restart.

Eriksen was harshly judged to have handled the ball which led a a penalty that Harry Kane dispatched with ease. Casemiro then score twice - either side of a Mathys Tel rocket - but United couldn’t rescue a draw.

Bizarre clash with Bayern ends in predictable outcome for Manchester United

Football, bloody hell, as Sir Alex Ferguson famously exclaimed after an action-packed finale against Bayern Munich. Manchester United had the final say again, Casemiro’s second goal meaning they got three in the Allianz Arena. Yet on a night of some surreal developments, there was a certain predictability, too. Of course Harry Kane scored. Bayern Munich bought him to be reassuringly reliable. Of course United lost, too, because that felt a guarantee for a team with an acute self-destructive streak and even as they can savour the fact that the striker they did get instead of Kane, Rasmus Hojlund, opened his account.

But as United’s third successive defeat was a tale of three summer signings, the notion it would come down to Kane against Hojlund, the master and the apprentice of goalscoring, overlooked United’s increasingly acute goalkeeping issue. While United named three goalkeepers on their bench, the problem was the one they had on the Allianz Arena pitch. Andre Onana was a Champions League finalist last season and arguably the outstanding shot-stopper in the competition. If Erik ten Hag thought he was buying a guarantee of their own, a Kane of goalkeeping, the Cameroonian marred his United bow in the competition with a horrible error, gifting Leroy Sane the opener and Bayern a path to a victory that, despite United’s three goals, rarely felt in doubt thereafter.

Bayern Munich vs Manchester United player ratings: Kane scores and Musiala shines after Onana howler

Manchester United were made to suffer in Germany after a promising start to their Champions League opener against Bayern Munich.

Christian Eriksen should have opened the scoring inside the first five minutes only to be denied by a sharp save from Sven Ulreich. United were quick to transition the ball up the pitch and looked comfortable in the game until a howler from Andre Onana gave the hosts the opening goal.

Leroy Sane added a second before the break following a wonderful solo run from Jamal Musiala who took the ball through midfield before pulling it back to Sane for the finish.

Rasmus Hojlund netted his first goal for United to give them hope of a comeback after the break but Harry Kane restored the host’s cushion with a beautifully taken penalty.

The goals kept on coming with three being scored late. Casemiro bagged a brace either side of a Mathys Tel rocket but United couldn’t get the win.

Andre Onana owns up to mistake against Bayern: ‘One of my worst games’

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has admitted that his error cost his side in their 4-3 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Erik Ten Hag’s side had started the game well, but fell behind in the 28th minute when Leroy Sané’s tame effort from outside of the box was palmed in by the United goalkeeper.

The drawback deflated the away side, who quickly conceded a second when Jamal Musiala’s brilliant play led to him teeing up Serge Gnabry to cooly slot home.

“It’s difficult. We started very good. After my mistake we lost control of the game,” Onana told TNT Sports following the match.

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane spoke to TNT Sports saying: “Crazy finish. For the majority of the game we controlled it and dictated the tempo. We just lost a bit of concentration in the last five minutes. Thankfully we held onto the lead.

“It’s been nice. It’s always great to score. Always room for improvement. It’s a great night tonight. We’re building. We can enjoy this.

“As a striker I know I’ll get chances. It’s exciting to play with them. We’re still getting to know each other. I’m excited for what’s to come.

“Whenever there’s a big price tag there’s a big expectation and you want to repay the club who have put faith in you.

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana to TNT Sports:

“It’s difficult. We started very good. After my mistake we lost control of the game. It’s a difficult situation for us, for me.

“The team were one down because of that mistake. I have to learn from it and be strong. I’m happy with the comeback of the team.

“I have a lot to prove. My start in Manchester hasn’t been so good, not how I want. This was one of my worst games. We have big ambition.

“It’s a tough time. We have to be together and work hard.”

FT Bayern Munich 4-3 Manchester United

Erik Ten Hag won’t be too disappointed with heading back to Old Trafford with only a one-goal deficit, especially as it looked like it could be a Bayern whitewash at one point in the game.

Manchester United started the game fairly well, trying to hit Bayern on the counter by getting the ball forward quickly and not always playing between the lines. Effective pressing combined with sloppiness from Tuchel’s team made Bayern Munich fairly ineffective in the opening stages.

An error from goalkeeper Andre Onana was quickly followed up by wonderful work from youngster Jamal Musiala however, who set Serge Gnabry up for a cool finish to put Bayern two goals up.

Rasmus Højlund managed to get his first Manchester United goal with a deflected effort, but a Harry Kane penalty shortly after, awarded for a harsh handball, saw Bayern quickly restore their two goal lead.

Casemiro battled from a lofted ball to guide home the ball on his left foot, but United again looked frail shortly after scoring when 18-year old Mathys Tel cooly finished past Onana.

A whipped in free-kick from Fernandes was touched home again by Casemiro, and was enough to send United away with only a narrow loss.

Bayern were the better team for the majority of the game and looked dominant, but the result is better than many would have expected for a Manchester United side in poor form and with several key defensive injuries.
