The hosts got off to the perfect start when Serge Gnabry, in his best run of form all season, latched onto Sadio Mané’s pass to give Bayern the lead.

Jamal Musiala, having been set up by Eric Choup-Moting, made it two before the half-hour mark with a low shot from the top of the box.

Bayern put the game to bed before the break through Sadio Mané. The Senegal international saw his spot-kick well saved by Robin Zenter in the Mainz goal but reacted quickest to tap home the rebound.

The visitors pulled one back on the stroke of half-time as Silvan Widmer rose highest from a corner before Leon Goretzka restored Bayern’s three-goal advantage on the hour mark, heading home Mané’s lofted cross.

Second-half substitute Mathys Tel scored, arguably, the pick of the bunch as the 17-year-old weaved his way through a series of defenders and fired a deflected shot beyond the helpless Zenter.

Marcus Ingvartsen capitalised on a calamitous error by Sven Ulreich for a late consolation goal before Choupo-Mouting completed the route.

This win took Bayern top of the table, two points clear of Union Berlin who play later today, whilst Mainz remain in midtable.
