Recently crowned Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Mainz in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
Scorers: Burkardt 18′, Niakhaté 27′, Barreiro 58′; Lewandowski 33′
Mainz started the encounter in blistering fashion, hitting to woodwork twice early on before finding the breakthrough in the 18th minute as Jonathan Burkardt pounced following a poor clearance.
The hosts doubled their lead 10-minutes later as captain Moussa Niakhaté was on hand to turn that ball home following a set-piece routine.
Bayern’s top scorer Robert Lewandowski gave the visitors a glimmer of hope when, receiving the ball in the box, the 33-year-old turned expertly and fired low into the bottom corner.
Despite controlling more of the ball Bayern struggled to create clear cut opportunities and a heavily deflected effort by Leandro Barreiro following a swift counterattack settled to encounter in what was a disappointing afternoon for the champions.
