Bayern Munich will kick off another Bundesliga season on Friday night but they are set to do so without David Alaba.
According to Sky Germany, the defender is suffering from muscular issues and will not feature.
The news is a considerable blow for the German champions. Alaba shone as a centre-back last season and has re-established himself as a crucial part of the team.
He has, however, been in headlines in recent weeks over the club’s failure to tie him down to a new contract. The 28-year-old has just one season remaining on his current deal.
The injury news means Hansi Flick will choose from two of Niklas Süle, Jérôme Boateng and Lucas Hernandez at the heart of his defence.
