Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidžić has confirmed that Leroy Sané will NOT be joining the club in January.

The Bundesliga champions were in hot pursuit of Sané throughout the summer and might have signed the Manchester City winger had he not sustained a serious knee injury in August’s Community Shield.

But with the 23-year-old nearing a return to action, there had been suggestions Bayern could reignite their interest and complete a deal during the winter window.

However, speaking on Thursday, Salihamidžić admitted that a move for the German international will not be possible this month.

“We need a player who will help us now,” Salihamidžić is quoted as telling Sport Bild.

Bayern are currently four points behind RB Leipzig in the race for the Bundesliga title and while Salihamidžić says they are hoping to bring in at least one new player in January, he also admitted they are currently not yet close to making a signing.

Last summer, Bayern reportedly refused to meet City’s valuation of Sané, which was understood to be in the region of €130m.

But the former Schalke man’s contract at the Etihad Stadium is set to expire in 2021 and with no sign of a renewal in sight, the Premier League champions may be forced to lower the demands come the the summer.

When asked for an update on Sané’s fitness earlier this week, City boss Pep Guardiola confirmed he could be available again in a matter of weeks.

“I think he is close. I spoke with him two days ago and he said to me he is training alone with the ball, he is doing incredibly well,” said Guardiola.

“His knee looks really good so I don’t think it is going to take too much time to come back to train with us. I think in the next few weeks he can come back.”
