The former Bayern star would like his old club to bring in the young centre back who has been nothing but impressive in his career so far.

Former Bayer Munich star Markus Babbel had told his side to sign young centre half Dayot Upamecano to try and solve their defensive problems that have plagued their 2020-21 campaign.

It was smooth sailing for Hansi Flick and his side last year as they won a historic treble behind their attacking flair and defensive solidity which led to the club’s sixth Champions League crown, their ninth Bundesliga title in a row, and their 20th DFB-Pokal title.

Bayern has looked less assured this season despite sitting top of the league, four points clear. The current Bundesliga champs have shipped in 24 goals already, which is more than any side in the league’s top six. Babbel thinks that Upamecano very well could be the player to shore up Bayern’s shaky defence. The young French defender is currently plying his trade with RB Leipzig and is in his fourth season with the German side with his performances making him one of the best defensive players on the planet.

Speaking to Sport1, Babble thinks the young defender can help the current champions.

“You have to think about something in the defensive area,” said Babbel. “He [Upamecano] can help, those responsible must think of him.”

Babbel stated: “The defenders need to be better, the goals conceded could be prevented. As a coach, I expect the central defenders to do better. The defenders have to learn again to recognise the danger earlier.”

After back to back losses to Borussia Monchengladbach and Holstein Kiel, Hansi Flick’s side got back to winning ways with a 2-1 win over SC Freiburg. However, the champs conceded yet again as their inability to keep clean sheets is starting to become a serious problem.

Up next for the league leaders is a trip to face Augsburg as they look to increase their lead at the top of the table.
