According to The Telegraph, the Bavarians could move for Kovacic this summer with only a year left on his contract with the Blues.

Bayern hired former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel a few days ago, and they could raid the Premier League club for the Croatian international.

Kovacic signed for Chelsea on loan in the 2018/19 season under Maurizio Sarri and struggled in advanced positions.

Frank Lampard was appointed and asked the club to sign him permanently. He joined for around €45 million from Real Madrid, signing a five-year deal.

Lampard played Kovacic deeper, where he could use his elite dribbling and ball-carrying skills to get the ball into dangerous positions.

Kovacic’s performances helped him win Chelsea’s Player of the Year award in the 2019/20 season.

The former Inter Milan midfield dynamo grew in status in London under Tuchel and new manager Graham Potter. He captained the club in their last games before the international break.

He has been in good form for club and country after dealing with niggling injuries for most of last season and early this campaign.

However, Chelsea have not renewed the initial five-year deal he signed until 2024. He has only one year left on his contract and the club is delaying.

This situation has alerted Manchester City. They are readying themselves for the departure of Ilkay Gundogan this summer.

Tuchel also likes the player and could get Bayern to move for him despite the club’s greater need for a holding midfielder.

Kovacic is a ball carrier and not a sitting anchorman despite featuring there sometimes.

Chelsea should be wary about selling an established winner and superb technician like Kovacic. He is a vocal leader in the squad – a quality they have not had enough of recently.

Losing him Man City would be worse as they would have to watch him perform for their rivals each week.
