Barcelona’s title hopes perished on Sunday as they slumped to a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Real Madrid.

With the prospect of a trophyless campaign looming large, Barcelona are likely to focus on the summer ahead.

The club are expected to sanction the sale of a few big names in order to return to the 1:1 rule. The funds are likely to be used in not only balancing the books but also bringing in star players.

Joshua Kimmich: The main target?

A recent report from Javi Miguel has provided further insights into Barcelona’s transfer plans this summer.

The Spanish journalist suggests that Barça’s priority will be to bring in a new defensive midfielder and that is where Joshua Kimmich comes into the fray.

Miguel adds that Barcelona have been disappointed with Oriol Romeu for his poor output. They now consider it imperative to find an answer for the number six position.

Kimmich is seen by many as the ideal solution. Barcelona have been monitoring the German’s situation for a while now.

Will Kimmich join Barcelona this summer?

Barcelona’s chances of securing the services of Kimmich are limited, but the midfielder is certainly not an impossible target for the Catalans.

It has been reported earlier that Kimmich is not entirely happy with the Bayern board and is likely to revisit his status in the team, especially after being demoted to a right-back role this season.

Kimmich’s current deal in Bavaria expires in 2025. If the midfielder continues to hold off from signing a new deal, Bayern may have no option but to cash in on the player.

Barcelona, to that end, will emerge as one of the potential suitors. However, the key for the Catalans will be to bring in fresh funds either by signing new partnership deals or selling players, before they make a push for Kimmich this summer.
