Bayern Munich have upped their contract offer for David Alaba as they seek to convince him to extend his stay with the club, a report from SportBild claims.

The Austria international has spent his entire career with the Bavarian giants and he has accumulated nearly 400 appearances across all competitions.

The 28-year-old has made the majority of his appearances from the left-back position, but over the past year, he has excelled at the heart of the club’s defence.

Alaba formed an impressive partnership with Jerome Boateng during the backend of the previous campaign as Bayern went on to win the treble for only the second time in their history.

Hence, the club are eager to commit him to a new long-term contract, but so far, they have been unable to do so. Alaba has less than 10 months remaining on his current deal and he is apparently in a standoff with Bayern over the wages.

According to SportBild, the reigning European champions are not looking to increase their wage offer for the defender. Instead, they are hoping to convince him by upping the contract length of the renewal from four to five years.

Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has previously stated that the club don’t want to lose anyone on a free transfer and they recently sanctioned the sale of Thiago Alcantara to Liverpool after he turned down a contract extension beyond next summer.

Both Alaba and Boateng have their deals expiring at the end of the current season and it remains to be seen how they cope with the situation, suppose they are unable to make the breakthrough in the contract talks with the duo.

Alaba missed the Bundesliga opener against Schalke 04 with a thigh injury, but he has returned to training ahead of the UEFA Super Cup clash against Sevilla in Hungary on Thursday night. Despite the uncertainty regarding his future, Alaba is expected to start against the Andalusian outfit.
