Keeping in view the composition of their squad, there are some changes expected to take place in the defensive area of the FC Barcelona team in the next summer transfer window.

As things stand, the Blaugranes have a surplus of center-backs in their ranks, with Pau Cubarsí, Iñigo Martínez, Ronald Araújo, Eric Garcia, and Andreas Christensen all being options for the two spots in the center of the backline.

However, another center-back has been closely linked with the Catalan club for the last few months, i.e., the German center-back Jonathan Tah, whose contract with Bayer Leverkusen is ending at the end of this season.

His experience, skills, and the fact that he can arrive for free makes him a highly appealing target for the next summer, and one of the sides that was expected to compete with Barcelona for his signing was Bayern Munich.

However, as SPORT has reported, the Bavarians have thrown in the towel in the race for Jonathan Tah, and this was confirmed by their Sporting Director Christopher Freund recently, as he said:

“Tah’s name is not in our thoughts right now. Our defense is at a great level, and it’s not something that is on Bayern’s table for next season.”

Meanwhile, Barcelona have been in contact with his agent, Pini Zahavi, but his future still remains highly uncertain as Deco himself recently commented that the center-back position in Hansi Flick’s team is well covered, despite Tah being an interesting option.

From among the five center-backs that the Blaugranes currently have in their squad, the futures of Cubarsí, Araújo, and Martínez, are rather secure, as the former two have already renewed, while the latter will also renew his contract soon.

This leaves Eric Garcia and Andreas Christensen as possible options to leave the Catalan club. Recent reports suggest Barcelona are looking to extend Garcia’s contract as well, so Christensen remains the most likely candidate for a departure.

Thus, it remains to be seen how the center-back position shapes at the Blaugrana club in the coming months, but for now, Deco is in the pole position to acquire Tah, as Bayern Munich have already surrendered.
