Following his emotional farewell at Bayer Leverkusen, it appears to be only a matter of time before Xabi Alonso gets appointed as the next Real Madrid manager.

The Spanish tactician is set to bring forth many changes to the squad and may even influence some of the Bayer Leverkusen stars to come to Santiago Bernabeu.

One of them could be Florian Wirtz, who, up until now, was poised to join Bayern Munich at the end of the season.

Bayern fear Real Madrid intervention

However, according to Kicker, Bayern Munich are growing increasingly concerned that Real Madrid could step in and hijack their proposed move for Wirtz.

Reports earlier this week suggested that the 21-year-old Germany international had already agreed terms with Bayern, even signing preliminary contracts for either a 2024 or 2025 transfer.

But Leverkusen remain firm in their stance. Club officials continue to insist that no deal has been signed, and that they maintain a strong relationship with the Wirtz camp.

In fact, Bayer are hoping to extend his contract beyond 2027 — though they are not blind to the growing external interest.

The arrival of Xabi Alonso at Madrid, combined with the possible departure of Rodrygo to Manchester City, could open up a pathway for Wirtz at the Bernabeu.

Real Madrid’s sporting project — alongside Alonso’s presence — may be more attractive than Bayern’s, especially for a player who has already flourished under the Spanish coach.

From Bayern’s perspective, the silence from Wirtz’s side has been deafening and as days pass, it will be interesting to see how this transfer saga unfolds.
