Bayern Munich are planning significant changes to their transfer policy which could see them sell several of their biggest stars, according to German outlet Kicker (via Transfermarkt).
The Bavarians have been the dominant force in the Bundesliga over the past decade. They currently sit six points clear at the top of the table, on course for their tenth straight league title.
They have also been a major player on the European stage. during the past ten seasons, they have won two Champions Leagues, finished as runners-up once, and have only failed to reach the semi-finals on three occasions.
It is this level of success that has allowed Bayern attract top-level players to the Allianz Arena. Meanwhile, it is rare to see them let go of any key stars.
However, that could be about to change in the coming years. German source Kicker claim they could become a selling club as they look for more sustainable methods following the COVID-19 pandemic.
The report claims they will focus on buying young players with potential, developing them, and selling them for a profit.
Who could they sell?
As one of the very best clubs in the world, Bayern naturally have plenty of players with some market value.
Robert Lewandowski, Manuel Neuer and Thomas Muller will probably stay put. All three are still among the best players in their respective positions, but their age hampers their market value.
Players such as Alphonso Davies and Jamal Musiala are still young and have plenty of room for development. They would also be likely to stay at the Allianz Arena for a few more years before being sold.
The ones most likely to be sold on would be those between the ages of 25 to 28. Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, Leroy Sane, Lucas Hernandez, Serge Gnabry, Benjamin Pavard, Marcel Sabitzer and Kingsley Coman all fall into this category.
How could this affect the Bundesliga?
This news could have a considerable impact on the Bundesliga. It could undoubtedly level the playing field a little bit.
Every other club in the league sells their biggest stars. Borussia Dortmund lost Jadon Sancho in the summer and will probably sell Erling Braut Haaland ahead of next season.
RB Leipzig have seen Timo Werner, Dayot Upamecano, Ibrahima Konate and Sabitzer depart over the past two years.
Whenever one of the challengers poses a serious threat to Bayern, their squad gets pulled apart. Even if they managed to win a league title, their best players would still go.
Look at Monaco in 2017 as an example. They toppled Paris Saint-Germain, but that didn’t stop Kylian Mbappe, Bernardo Silva and Tiemoue Bakayoko from leaving in the next transfer window.
This makes it near-impossible to develop a side capable of regularly competing for major honours. This has allowed Bayern to dominate domestically, winning eight of the last nine league titles by at least ten points.
But with the Bavarians also selling their best players, they should find it more challenging to build a super team. This ought to make the Bundesliga more competitive.
However, this could reduce the Bundesliga to a ‘stepping stone’ league. If everyone in the league is a selling club, world-class players won’t stay very long.
The Bundesliga would soon become like the Eredivisie or the Primeira Liga. Without the big players, global interest would decline.
Consequently, the division would fall even further behind the Premier League when it comes to revenue. On the European stage, German teams would struggle to make an impact.
