First Half

To be fair to RB Leipzig, they started alright. They looked to counter-press Bayern whenever the ball got into midfield, they tried a couple of balls in behind for Loïs Openda, and they tried playing out from the back and through the thirds. But they had an issue every time – Bayern Munich won possession back instantly and took control.

Olise’s finish for the opener was fired home past Gulácsi brilliantly and off his weaker right foot too in the 27th minute and from there the floodgates opened for Bayern to go through the gears. Soon after the opener, it was beautifully fluid and patient build-up play before the ball found its way to Luis Díaz, who made it 2-0 after 32 minutes.

It only took 10 minutes for Bayern to find their 3rd and it was Michael Olise once again. Leipzig cleared the ball from the corner but it went straight to a Bayern player, they failed to pick up Olise, who got himself back onside after taking the corner; he made his run in behind before he let the trigger go to make it 3-0.

One of the biggest issues Leipzig faced in the opening half was that when they tried going long to Openda, he had no support at all. Facing two big centre backs all on your own is a recipe for disaster in a sense. He was left isolated.

Second Half

Ole Werner made a double change at half-time to try to get Leipzig competing in the game, bringing on Antonio Nusa and Rômulo. Bringing on Nusa to a degree worked because he was the only Leipzig attacker that went at the Bayern defenders with no fear whatsoever and tried making things happen. He scored a lovely goal but that was later ruled out by VAR.

Bayern took their foot off the gas slightly in the 2nd half but they still looked so comfortable. Harry Kane scored three magnificent goals to complete a wonderful hat-trick, and for Vincent Kompany, the opening night couldn’t have gone any better.

Player Ratings

Bayern Munich:

Manuel Neuer – 6/10. He didn’t really have to do anything at all because Bayern were so dominant. Comfortable as usual with the ball.

Konrad Laimer – 8/10. His positioning whilst Bayern had the ball was superb; it caused Leipzig quite a bit of confusion and it also helped the likes of Serge Gnabry and Michael Olise to be free. A solid display.

Dayot Upamecano – 7/10. Another solid display from a Bayern Munich player. Defensively he didn’t really have much to do but when required to, he did his job well.

Jonathan Tah – 7/10. Just like Upamecano, he didn’t have much to do defensively. But when he was required to step up as part of the press or defend, he did his job well.

Josip Stanisic – 8/10. He had an interesting role playing on the opposite side to his usual side, but he did excellently. Just like Laimer on the opposite side, his movement and positioning helped free Luis Díaz up on the left and that proved quite effective.

Joshua Kimmich – 8/10. He did his job as the midfield anchor. Tasked with controlling things, he did just that to a very good standard. In possession he dropped in between the centre backs and that allowed others to push further forward as he added a solid defensive foundation.

Leon Goretzka – 7/10. Done his job, pushed forward as an extra body in midfield and overall had a good, well-rounded display alongside Joshua Kimmich.

Serge Gnabry – 7/10. He wasn’t one of the obvious standouts for Bayern but his role in the team was so crucial for some of the goals, particularly the flick-on for Luis Díaz’s goal.

Michael Olise – 10/10. What is there even left to say about this superstar? There wasn’t a single fault in his game and he was a constant threat all game on the right for Bayern. Leipzig couldn’t handle him; he was unstoppable

Luis Díaz – 8/10. He had an important role to play for Bayern on that left-hand side tonight and he did it superbly. His goal was well taken, a top-class finish matching a top-class team move.

Harry Kane – 9/10. He wasn’t too involved in terms of goal-scoring opportunities in the first half but his movement was an issue for Leipzig’s defenders. He likes dropping deep and because of that, the centre backs of Leipzig had nobody obvious to mark. His three goals in the second half were all world class.

Sacha Boey – 7/10. Came on after 68 minutes at right back for Konrad Laimer and did what was expected of him.

Kim Min-Jae – 6/10. He got an assist for Harry Kane’s 3rd goal, defended well when required to and done his job well across the 25 minutes he played.

Lenmart Karl – 6/10. He wasn’t involved too much when he was on but he had a couple of bright moments and you can see why he’s so highly rated within Bayern. Just 17 years old.

Aleksandar Pavlovic – 6/10. Came on for Leon Goretzka after 68 minutes. Did his job, simple as that.

RB Leipzig:

Péter Gulácsi – 3/10. It wasn’t all his fault; he had very little protection from his defenders. But he only made three saves and saw six goals go into his net.

Ridle Baku – 5/10. He wasn’t great but he wasn’t the worst Leipzig player on the pitch either. But defensively he went missing on a few occasions and it always seemed Luis Díaz was free and had time to do what he wanted.

Willi Orban – 4/10. For someone so experienced, it didn’t seem like he was leading by example. Ole Werner may have passed the captaincy onto someone else but he still has a responsibility to lead and it didn’t seem he did that.

Castello Lukeba – 2/10. Where to begin? Gave the ball away cheaply too many times and sometimes took unnecessary risks and he also made an error leading to a goal. Shocking display.

David Raum – 3/10. He had no chance down his left side, having to deal with both Serge Gnabry and Michael Olise, who were regularly moving around and rotating freely. Maybe he could’ve got more help but he did make an error falling asleep for the third goal where Olise got away to score.

Xaver Schlager – 3/10. Got no help but when he had the ball, he lost it far too easily. He was bullied around the midfield.

Nicolas Seiwald – 2/10. Non-existent; can’t remember him even being on the pitch, to be totally honest. Ghost-like display.

Xavi Simons – 3/10. He just couldn’t get into the game, couldn’t get on the ball to produce the magic and quality we know he can produce. Similar to Seiwald, he seemed nonexistent, like a ghost.

Johan Bakayoko – 2/10. He couldn’t get in behind by using the electric pace he has at his disposal and was pinned back to an extent. But he failed to do his defensive duties well enough. Even when Leipzig were able to get out, he didn’t get forward to support Openda.

Loïs Openda – 2/10. I kind of felt sorry for him, to be honest; he had no support at all in the first half and had to deal with 2 big center backs who are stronger than him. He can’t do anything about that all by himself. He was taken off at half time.

Yan Diomande – 3/10. To be fair to the young kid, it’s a really tricky game to show what you’ve got and also he’s adapting to a new league in a new country. In the opening few minutes he showed glimpses but defensively he looked a bit lost and that didn’t help David Raum. He was also taken off at half time.

Rômula – 2/10. Failed to make any significant impact whatsoever. Leipzig could’ve played with 10 and you couldn’t tell the difference with or without him. Totally invisible.

Antonio Nusa – 6/10. The only player I felt that looked to make things happen, had an impact on how Bayern defended, and had a goal which was unfortunately ruled out for offside. Yes, it still wasn’t ideal but he may have played himself into the XI for next week.

Final Conclusion

Ole Werner has a lot of work to do with his RB Leipzig players to not just understand the technical details of what he wants but in particular the mental side, where these players believe in what is being coached. Without belief, then there’s no point. But I do think in the long term, against sides with similar quality, it’ll work.

The perfect night for Bayern Munich; it couldn’t have gone any better if Vincent Kompany wished. The only criticism I’d have is that they should’ve kept the foot on the gas, kept up the 1st-half rhythm into the 2nd half and maybe looked for a seventh, eighth or ninth goal. Other than that, it was near enough perfect and that is a message sent to the other 16 teams to be scared.
