Borussia Mönchengladbach hosted Bayern Munich at Borussia-Park and move on to the next round of the DFB Pokal after a 5-0 win.
Scorers: Koné 2′, Bensebaini 15′ 21′ (P), Embolo 51′, 57′
The hosts would get off to a lightning-quick start on Wednesday night as Kouadio Koné opened the scoring just two minutes in.
Stunned early, Bayern struggled to settle into the match and Gladbach’s attack was ripping them open in the final third.
A six-minute brace from Ramy Bensebaini, which included slotting home a slick penalty past Manuel Neuer, had the hosts up 3-0 after just 21 minutes.
After the first 45 minutes, Bayern only had one shot on target which was a soft attempt from Serge Gnabry that Yann Sommer saved comfortably. Leroy Sané also had a chance but Joe Scally made a last-ditch tackle.
Coming out after the break the visitors needed to dig deep to try and turn things around. However, the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Müller weren’t at their best.
Two defensive slips allowed Breel Embolo to net a six-minute brace and make things 5-0 before the 60-minute mark seemingly putting a comeback out of reach for the visitors.
With the result, Gladbach move on to the round of 16 while Bayern are eliminated in the second round yet again.
