Bayern got their 2024/25 campaign under way in expected fashion with a comfortable 4-0 win away at Ulm in the DFB Cup first round last Friday. As they’d been for most of pre-season, the team was dominant, resolute in challenges, aggressive in pressing and clinical in front of goal in coach Vincent Kompany’s first competitive fixture in charge. “Games like this aren’t always easy. It was important we won our challenges and were aggressive in winning the second balls,” the new boss said afterwards, while also admitting that there was still room for improvement. “It wasn’t always perfect, but we played with discipline,” the 38-year-old stated. Two-goal hero Thomas Müller also added, “We were serious but not free of mistakes. I thought it was a good outing, even though we can improve on the ball.”

Tuesday’s friendly against Grasshoppers provides the opportunity to work on those final finer points and also allows the players who returned late for pre-season to get some playing time. In any case, Kompany stressed after the Ulm game that the foundation has been laid: “The important thing is we show the right energy. That’s the bedrock we need.”

Thomas Müller and Harry Kane both scored in Friday’s win against Ulm.

Bayern’s record so far in pre-season is good. Apart from a 1-1 draw in Düren, the Bavarians have won all their friendlies against Rottach-Egern, Tottenham Hotspur (twice) and Tirol, as well as building confidence in competitive action against Ulm. “The players are eager to show something,” said Kompany. Now they need to take that momentum into the first Bundesliga match of the season in Wolfsburg on Sunday.

Leroy Sane was able to train with the team a bit on Monday:

Opponent: Grasshoppers

Bayern’s opponents are already back in the swing of their league season, although it’s been a stuttering start for the Zurich club with only one point from four games, leaving them bottom of the Swiss Super League. However, they arrive in Munich on the back of a good win in the cup, having beaten sixth-tier Regensdorf 9-0 in the first round on Sunday. Switzerland’s record title holders now want to use the game against Bayern to get back in the groove for next weekend’s Super League tie against second-placed Sion.
