Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has singled out midfielder Leon Goretzka for praise in the wake of Bayern Munich’s extraordinary Champions League win over Barcelona.
Hansi Flick’s men destroyed the Blaugrana 8-2 in their semi-final clash in Lisbon on Friday, with Alphonso Davies and Thomas Müller receiving many plaudits for their contributions.
However, Bayern CEO Rummenigge believes Goretzka deserves the most credit for his contribution to the historic victory.
Speaking to Kicker about the Bavarians’ midfield, the former Bayern and Inter striker said: “If I can only mention Leon Goretzka as an example. He was the best player for me on Friday.”
The 25-year-old Germany international has arguably been the most improved player for the Bundesliga champions in what has been a very difficult season to navigate.
And Rummenigge noted that Goretzka had overcome the unprecedented disruption in magnificent fashion.
“He has made an incredible development, especially now in these corona[virus] times,” the 64-year-old said.
Goretza has made 36 appearances this season, scoring eight goals and racking up 11 assists (via Transfermkt).
