Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has expressed a desire to bring Bastian Schweinsteiger back to the club.

Schweinsteiger made 500 appearances for Bayern before leaving in 2015, winning eight Bundesliga titles and the 2013 Champions League.

The 34-year-old currently plays for MLS side DC United and Rummenigge admits he is exploring ways in which the midfielder can return.

“FC Bayern is always interested in binding important former players to the club,” he told Abendzeitung.

“I would like to have Bastian Schweinsteiger with us, but I don’t know whether he’ll ever come back to Munich

“For me, it was one of the most emotional moments of last year when Basti took a lap of honour after his farewell game.”

“I’m in touch with him relatively often,” the German added. “We regularly text and also sometimes talk on the phone.

“I told him he should think over whether returning is an attractive option for him.”

The Bundesliga champions already have Hasan Salihamidžić as their sporting director and Philipp Lahm fulfilling an ambassadorial role.
