Bayern and Dortmund on alert as Man City starlet rejects new deal | OneFootball

Manchester City youngster Rabbi Matondo has turned down the offer of a new contract.

That’s according to The Sun, who report that Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Borussia Mönchengladbach and RB Leipzig have all been keeping tabs on Matondo and could try to sign him when his current deal expires in June 2020, if not before.

The 18-year-old forward is yet to feature in City’s first-team squad but has already been capped at senior international level for Wales.

Pep Guardiola is believed to be a big admirer of the youngster and has included him in first-team training sessions on a number of occasions, but there are fears he could be about to follow Jadon Sancho and Brahim Díaz by leaving the club in search of game-time elsewhere.

Matondo – who was born in Liverpool but grew up in South Wales – was watched by scouts from a number of top German clubs when he played against Hoffenheim in the Uefa Youth League earlier this season, while Nice boss Patrick Vieira is also believed to be a fan.

He earned his one and, so far, only senior Wales cap when he came off the bench in a 1-0 defeat to Albania last year.

Matondo is said to be the fastest player at City, meaning he is even quicker than Leroy Sané and Kyle Walker. Speaking in November, he revealed that Sané had given him some advice during the club’s pre-season tour of the United States.

“He [Sané] spoke to me about things he thinks I can do or what I can do better with my movement,” Matondo told the Manchester Evening News.

“It was good and obviously Pep [Guardiola] spoke to me about what I can do on and off the ball, how I can receive the ball. They’re simple things but they make a big difference.

“It was a very good experience seeing how the players train and how the gaffer controls everything – how he takes the sessions and what he says in team meetings.

“It just makes me hungry to go over there hopefully one day and be around there more.

“Even playing against teams like Bayern Munich, Liverpool and seeing Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, Arjen Robben, [Franck] Ribery on the pitch was top. That just makes me more hungry.

“It felt for me it showed me how close I am in terms of being around the first team and seeing how Leroy operates and players at other clubs in my position and what they do that I don’t.

“It will help me to progress in the Under-23s and hopefully when the time is right for me to go on loan or whatever it is happens, it will be good.”

Perhaps Matondo can expect to make his senior debut when City take on Burton Albion in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final clash later this month.
