Bayern Munich are set to hire Vincent Kompany as their next manager after agreeing a transfer fee with Burnley.

The Bavarian outfit identified the former Manchester City captain as their primary candidate after a long and unsuccessful hunt for a replacement to Thomas Tuchel. A number of high profile coaches, such as Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann and Oliver Glasner, turned down the chance to take over.

The Belgian took the Clarets back to the Premier League after winning the Championship in 2023, but oversaw the team’s immediate return to the second tier as they finished the season in 19th place.

Bayern concluded negotiations with Burnley on Saturday morning, agreeing to pay the Lancashire club £10.2m in compensation to let Kompany join as head coach, according to The Times.

Joining Kompany will be his assistants Floribert Ngalula and Bram Geers from Burnley after agreeing a three-year contract with Bayern.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup final against Manchester United, Man City boss Pep Guardiola backed Bayern’s decision to hire Kompany.

“I’m happy the link has happened for Bayern to Vinny,” Guardiola said. “I have a huge opinion about Vinny, doesn’t matter the relegation with Burnley.

“What I felt playing against him and knowing him, I have the highest opinion of his work, personality, his knowledge of the game, how he handles the media.

“I’d love Bayern to take the best decision. I love that club. I’m in love with Bayern Munich for many many reasons. Hopefully they take the best decision, if they believe Vinny is the right decision, for Munich they will have a guy to support unconditionally.”

Guardiola also predicted that Kompany will one day fill the hot seat at Man City. “Yes, for sure. He will come,” the Catalan said with a smile.
