José Mourinho’s miserable summer ended on a sour note as the Premier League outfit lost, and were comfortably outplayed, by the Bundesliga champions at the Allianz Arena.

With the off-season drawing to a close and the season coming alarmingly into view, it was perhaps no surprise to see both sides naming strong starting XIs for this one.

Mourinho was virtually at full-strength in Bavaria and it was his side who went closest to scoring early on. A cross from Matteo Darmian found Marcus Rashford inside the area, but the England international’s strike on goal was blocked by Manuel Neuer.

The home side weren’t to be outdone though and went close themselves on 10 minutes. A low cross from the left ended at the feet of Thiago but the midfielder’s shot was saved well by David De Gea.

Niko Kovač’s men were controlling the tempo of the game and had the majority of the ball, but the Premier League outfit looked consistently dangerous on the break – Rashford especially, was causing Mats Hummels all sorts of problems with his pace. Still though, the deadlock was yet to be broken.

The home team were truly in the ascendancy now, but it probably tells you a lot about how the game was going that the biggest cheer of the half at the midway point came when a paper aeroplane landed in De Gea’s net.

That was about as close as anything got to opening the scoring in the opening 45 minutes, but with the second half came some of the striking big guns.

Robert Lewandowski, for so long linked with a switch to Old Trafford, was brought into the fray and almost immediately made an impact. A high, looping ball was brought down expertly by the Pole inside the penalty area, and although he looked to have been dragged down by Chris Smalling, the referee waved play on.

But the goal did finally come on 59 minutes. A corner from the left found the head of Javi Martinez, who rose highest and flicked a header into the bottom right-hand corner of the net.

A raft of changes after that ruined the tempo of the match, but still Bayern were the far superior side and never really looked like conceding.

As the final whistle blew, thoughts in the United camp immediately turned to their opening league game against Leicester in just five days time.
