Bayer Leverkusen left-back Alejandro Grimaldo has shown interest in potentially joining Real Madrid in the future, saying that he would like to follow Xabi Alonso wherever he goes.

Grimaldo’s interest is tied to the possibility that Alonso might become the next head coach of Real Madrid, replacing Carlo Ancelotti and the left-back is keen to follow Alonso if he takes up the new position at the Spanish club.

“If I would go with Xabi to Madrid? It would have to be seen at that time,” said the left-back as quoted by Fichajes.

“It is clear that I have a very special relationship with him, I have grown a lot as a player with him and I want to grow more with him and it is true that I would like to continue at his side, be it at Bayer Leverkusen or wherever,” he added.

Grimaldo to Real Madrid – Yay or Nay?

Grimaldo is open to following Alonso’s career path, but as suggested by the player himself, his ultimate decision will hinge on the situation at the right time.

While joining Real Madrid might appeal to him, his options will depend on the club’s plans for a long-term left-back.

At the moment, the Canadian Alphonso Davies is the top candidate for that position, which could impact Grimaldo’s plans to achieve his own sporting goals. On the other hand, Real Madrid are also not ready to give up on Ferland Mendy yet.

The Frenchman happens to be Ancelotti’s favourite and the Italian does not want to lose him given his defensive prowess.

As suggested before, Mendy does not wish to leave Real Madrid either and is currently seeking a renewal.

This has put the team from the Spanish capital in a difficult state as they feel keeping both Mendy and Davies would make life difficult for the team.
