Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Matej Kovar has admitted that he would love to return to Manchester United in the future.

Kovar left United last summer on a permanent deal, bringing an end to a five-and-a-half-year stay at Old Trafford. He joined United in January 2018 from FC Slovacko.

Kovar was a regular between the posts for the United-21s, making almost 50 appearances in League 2.

He enjoyed loan spells at Swindon Town, Burton Albion and Sparta Prague where he gained valuable first-team experience. At Sparta Prague, Kovar collected a league winner’s medal.

The 24-year-old did not make a competitive first-team appearance for the Red Devils but he featured in two senior friendlies during last summer’s pre-season tour.

At Leverkusen last term, Kovar quickly established himself as the number two and managed to make an impressive 17 appearances across all competitions for the side as they won the Bundesliga and the German Cup.

Kovar spoke Rheinische Post about his career progress and admitted that while he is more than happy with life under Xabi Alonso, he wouldn’t completely rule out a return to United at some point in the future if he were presented with such an opportunity.

He said, “It wasn’t an easy decision to leave everything behind at that age: the country, my friends, my family.”

“But when Manchester United calls, you don’t have to think long.”

“For me, a childhood dream came true. I had to take that chance.”

He added, “I was there for five years, enjoyed the time, met a lot of great people and matured as a goalkeeper and a person. I’m grateful for the experiences.”

“Of course, there were ups and downs, but they’re part of life. Maybe I’ll come back one day, that would be nice.”

It’s certainly heartwarming to see that Kovar still holds United dear despite parting ways with the club.
