Bayer Leverkusen are set to complete the signing of Lucas Vazquez, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Manager Erik ten Hag wants more reinforcements after his team’s 2-1 defeat to Hoffenheim. That result highlighted the need for more squad depth before the new season starts.
Leverkusen have already signed Jarell Quansah from Liverpool. They are now close to securing a deal for Vazquez.
The 34-year-old has already undergone medical checks in secret. The deal is expected to be signed on Tuesday once all paperwork is completed.
The Spanish full-back will arrive on a free transfer following the end of his long spell at Madrid.
His contract expired this summer, even though he was still a regular for the La Liga champions last season.
Vázquez first joined Madrid as a 16-year-old and worked his way through the ranks to become an important squad member.
He made 402 appearances for the club in all competitions, bagging 38 goals and 59 assists.
His consistency and ability to adapt earned him a trusted role under different managers at Madrid.
Vázquez is renowned for his flexibility on the pitch. He can play both as a right-back and as a winger. His style combines strong defensive work with attacking qualities.
He uses his dribbling skills and accurate crosses to support attacks, while his work rate and tackling ability help protect the defence.
The Spaniard collected numerous trophies with Madrid, including four La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey, five Champions League trophies, and three FIFA Club World Cups.
This experience will be valuable for Leverkusen as they prepare for a demanding season in both domestic and European competitions.
