Bayer Leverkusen chief executive Fernando Carro has confirmed that his side will almost certainly have to sell one of their star players even as Manchester United continue to be strongly linked with moves for defensive duo Jeremie Frimpong and Edmond Tapsoba.

United are set to tap into the market for backline reinforcements ahead of what is shaping up to be a very busy summer transfer window.

Since Erik ten Hag’s arrival in 2022, United have often been mentioned to be on the hunt for a right-back, with Frimpong a major target for the club. These rumours have not subsided and the Red Devils are thought to still be keen on the Netherlands international.

A recent report covered by The Peoples Person divulged that Frimpong is the 20-time English champions’ number one choice and they have “made some contact” to explore the possibility of getting a deal over the line.

Also believed to be on United’s radar is Frimpong’s teammate, Tapsoba.

The pair have been crucial parts of Leverkusen’s incredible 2023/24 campaign that saw the German giants clinch their first-ever Bundesliga title on Sunday. Xabi Alonso’s side have won 25 of their 29 top-flight games and remain unbeaten in all competitions.

Tapsoba has helped Leverkusen keep 15 clean sheets so far.

Meanwhile, Frimpong – who has excelled in a right-wing back position – has plundered eight goals and seven assists. It’s easy to see why United and other parties retain an admiration for them.

Carro spoke to Spanish newspaper Diario AS (via Manchester Evening News) and remarked, “Every year we need to sell one big player to find budget for new signings, so probably we will sell one player.”

“We’re planning to sign two or three players with that amount of money.”

Frimpong and Tapsoba’s contracts with Leverkusen are set to expire in 2028, meaning Die Schwarzroten are in a strong negotiating position if the likes of United come calling.

Carro’s admission should alert United to the potential availability of Frimpong and Tapsoba and the possibility of making a transfer happen. Both stars would massively improve the team.
