Fernando Carro – the CEO of Bayer Leverkusen – has admitted he was left “annoyed” by recent rumours surrounding Florian Wirtz and Bayern Munich.
German media has been rife with reports over the last few days concerning a supposed agreement having been reached between Wirtz and the newly-crowned Bundesliga champions, despite interest from Manchester City and Real Madrid.
However, Tuesday afternoon threw those claims into significant doubt after it was revealed that Wirtz and his parents made a trip to Manchester to hold a meeting with key Etihad Stadium figures and take a tour of the club’s facilities.
There also remains the possibility of Real Madrid emerging more strongly in the chase for a player that is a huge favourite of the man expected to become their next head coach in Bayer Leverkusen’s current boss, Xabi Alonso.
With the situation concerning Florian Wirtz evidently very fluid and open, one of the key figures within the BayArena has spoken out on claims concerning Bayern Munich as well as reports of a price tag placed on the creative midfielder.
Speaking during a new interview with RTL Deutschland, Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro was quizzed on recent reports from some sections of German media concerning an agreement with the Allianz Arena side from the perspective of the player.
“I know it’s not true and it’s annoying when you read reports that aren’t true,” Carro admitted. He continued, “We have a trusting relationship with Florian Wirtz and his parents, we are in almost daily contact.
“Of course, Florian has to think about his future. But at least we are not aware – and I can assume that this is correct – that anything has been decided for him.”
Various reports have also suggested that Leverkusen will be demanding an eye-watering €150 million for the Germany international playmaker from Bayern Munich, to which Carro responded, “Bayern Munich can make an offer at any time and then we have to consider it.
“But at the moment, we have no offer, from any club. First of all, Florian Wirtz has a contract until 2027, so we are relatively relaxed about that.”
For now, Manchester City are likely to continue their patient approach to negotiations and attempts to lure Wirtz over to the Etihad Stadium, confident in their project and opportunity to succeed Kevin De Bruyne in the heart of their midfield.
The Belgian international will bring an end to a 10-year stay at Manchester City next month upon the expiry of his contract, with his final game for the club at the Etihad Stadium coming in a Premier League clash with Bournemouth.
