Batman not Robin – John Kennedy’s route to the Celtic job

Article image:Batman not Robin – John Kennedy’s route to the Celtic job

Celtic has apparently blocked John Kennedy’s move to join Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham Hotspur, if true that’s somewhat unfair in my book.

Kennedy of course has been on the coaching staff for quite some time and is tipped by some to fill the managerial position himself after working under Ronny Deila, Neil Lennon, Brendan Rodgers and most recently Ange Postecoglou.

John could have a great career ahead of him in the world of football management, but Celtic for me is too big a job for some one to start their first permanent gig. Remember Liam Brady and John Barnes? I rest my case.

I know Neil Lennon was the exception to that rule, but Lenny’s situation was different, back then we had nothing to lose and were up against a Rangers heading for the abyss. Today we don’t just want to make a mark domestically, but in Europe. We aim to reach the next level and John Kennedy is not the man we should be tasking for that job. We need a quality experienced manager for that task.

I have nothing against John Kennedy and I think he’s contributed massively to our success the last few years, but his place at the club is as a coach and I’d be more than happy to see him stay on under a new manager as he’s got plenty to give, but as the main man? No, if he wants to spread his wings in management he’d be better off doing that somewhere else, and maybe after that he will make a fine Celtic manager, given we are now into a period of change after every couple os seasons.

The attraction for trying something difference by going to Spurs with Ange Postecoglou is obvious and it will also come with a significant rise in wages. However of John Kennedy has real ambitions to be a Celtic manager he needs to take the top job and somewhere else and prove he can a successful manager rather than just a top quality assistant.

John Kennedy speaking to The Celtic Star at a recent media conference. Ange had other things on that day!!!

The Celtic job can’t be used as a learning curve, we are too big for that. Hugh Keevins himself tipped John for the job, that itself tells you it’s doomed for failure!

Batman not Robin is the route John Kennedy should take if he wants to be appointed as Celtic manager.
