Former Bayern Munich legend Bastian Schweinsteiger has urged his former teammate to leave Old Trafford in search of a better team to reignite his career.

The German signed for United back in 2015 when Louis van Gaal was in charge but left the club in 2017 after falling out with then-manager Jose Mourinho.

Rashford burst onto the scene in February 2016 with a brace versus FC Midtjylland in the Europa League and then followed it up with an explosive double versus Arsenal in the Premier League days later.

He has since represented his boyhood team 398 times and scored 131 times for the Red Devils. However, after enjoying the best season of his career last year when he bagged 30 goals, he has struggled immensely on and off the pitch this time around.

Numerous pundits have claimed that the forward should probably aim to leave the club in the summer and the financial benefits of a sale for United’s PSR problems have also been highlighted.

Schweinsteiger has become the latest voice to assert that Rashford and United should separate in the summer. INEOS are planning a summer clearout and Rashford’s name is also on that list.

Speaking to Gary Neville on Sky Sports’, The Overlap, the German claimed that the current state of the United team is holding back the 26-year-old winger.

“I would love to see him in a better team where he gets the balls in the right moment. I’d love to see that. In the years in the past, you don’t really see that.

“If he would play for a different team, maybe he would also increase his level a little bit more. He’s still the player who can decide their games but he doesn’t show it many times.”

However, the 2014 World Cup winner was also keen to point out that others are not completely to blame for his major slump.

“Maybe he is also a little bit frustrated inside with how it is, you know. I think that first of all, he has to understand that he can also be the example.

“You can handle frustration differently. But someone needs to speak with him and tell him. Also, it has to come from his own – that’s very important.”

Schweinsteiger also highlighted a major issue that has frustrated United fans all season and this is Rashford’s inability to follow tactical plans of pressing and tracking his runner.

Elaborating on the issue the German claimed, “Sometimes you have coaches who tell you ‘stay on the left, stay on the right’. But you need to understand – if you play for Pep Guardiola, you need to understand what he wants and you have to do it. You cannot just go to someone and say ‘I run fast and decide games’. You need to help out and he needs to understand why.”

The problem is that there do not seem to be many takers for the striker. Paris Saint-Germain are the most frequently linked team, especially with the probable departure of Kylian Mbappe.

However, recent reports seem to suggest that the team from the French capital are not that interested in recruiting in the out-of-form attacker.

There also seems to be a constant stream of mixed signals coming from INEOS on whether or not they want to keep him.

It is one of the many key decisions that the new co-owners will need to get spot on if they are to set the team up for the best possible start to next season.
