AZ Alkmaar’s match against NEC Nijmegen was abandoned due to a medical accident involving Bas Dost, Voetbal International reports. The NEC striker simply went to the ground around the halfway line but Dost, 34, regained consciousness and was carried off the field.
Dost, pictured during his time at Club Brugge, had thrown the ball to an AZ player for a free kick, walked back a bit and suddenly (without contact with another player on the field) went to the ground. At first no one noticed what was going on and football continued. Suddenly referee Jeroen Manschot realized that Dost urgently needed medical help.
The emergency services immediately rushed onto the field to treat the former Sporting striker while players shielded Dost from the view of the cameras as the forward was treated by medics before a large white cloth was also held to block the view.
After a few minutes of treatment, former Club Brugge striker Dost was carried off the field on a stretcher and reassured fans at the AFAS Stadion he was conscious by raising his hand. This was confirmed via social media by both NEC and AZ.
The match was abandoned but whether the match will be replayed or the result settled is yet to be determined. At the time of Dost getting treatment, NEC were leading 2-1 thanks to goals from the Dutch striker and Magnus Mattsson, 24, to give the visitors the lead before Vangelis Pavlidis pulled one back for the hosts.
Earlier this season there was also a scare between RKC Waalwijk and Ajax, when goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen needed long injury treatment after a collision with Brian Brobbey. Things are now going in the right direction for the Brabant goalkeeper, as was confirmed on Saturday evening.
