The Spanish midfielder did not have a great season last year despite a very good start and now that Yacine Adli and Charles De Ketelaere are at the club, it would be easy to picture him getting even less game time.

Against Udinese though, he played a role in all four of the Rossoneri goals in the 4-2 victory. His shot led to the penalty for the first, he then played a key part in the move for the second, scored the third and assisted the fourth.

It was a display that clearly impressed Barzagli and he thinks the competition for places will be very healthy.

“Competition helps and stimulates: he started very well last year then got a bit lost,” Barzagli said.

“Against Udinese he played an excellent game, with great link-up. He’s a guy who knows how to play football. Having competition gives you an extra stimulus.”
