Ex-Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has appeared to confirm that Barcelona have accepted an invitation to join a proposed European Super League.
The 57-year-old, who announced his resignation from the Catalan club earlier on Tuesday night dropped the revelation in a statement that could have dramatic effects on the future shape of football as we know it.
In his press conference, Bartomeu said: “I can announce some extraordinary news.
“Yesterday we accepted a proposal to participate in a future European Super League.
“This would guarantee the future financial sustainability of the club. And we have accepted the future Club World Cup.”
Plans were leaked last week over a supposed ‘European Premier League’ which suggested that Liverpool and Manchester United had taken part in discussions over a new tournament, backed by FIFA.
The proposal would allegedly see around 19 teams from across Europe take part in a new prestigious competition instead of the Champions League in a new league format.
